AXIS MUNDI is Hotel Pro Forma’s 40th Anniversary Performance, a new site-specific performance in large format with 20 performers and newly composed live music by Den Sorte Skole. AXIS MUNDI is staged in Store Vega’s beautiful concert hall, experienced from above on balconies from different angles.
AXIS MUNDI unfolds on a huge image filling the entire floor with clippings from the famous, labyrinthine copper print ‘The drawbridge’ by the Italian architect Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-78). Axis Mundi means world axis and is the earth’s center within religion and mythology – a fixed element of traditional cultures’ world view, a connecting point between heaven and earth around which the universe unfolds.
AXIS MUNDI is about man’s persistent attempt to establish a personal axis mundi, structure, and order in life and in the chaos of reality.
The music for AXIS MUNDI is both created and performed by the critically acclaimed Copenhagen sample and composer duo Den Sorte Skole consisting of Martin Højland and Simon Dokkedal, who have received, among other things, the Crown Prince Couple’s Culture Award (2017), one of the most prestigious awards in Denmark.
