In the darkness of the night the baroque art chamber – defining the set – turns into nothing less than Genesis. The theme is the double, reflection, genetic science, Genesis. Five identical pairs of twins aging from 7 to 67 are as doubles the performers in the show. ‘the theme is taken to its extreme: with two angels guiding the way, the audience divides into two and are, like a pair of twins – led from the same point of departure two separate ways through the tableaux of the different rooms. The result is a double performance: Words spoken are revealed and in both routes while simultaneously only a part of the tableau is visible to the audience. By using this simple artifice a major effect is achieved: our constant need to survey and look through, dominate and understand is made impossible. The invisible, yet heard, becomes dim, enigmatic, sensuous and mind-alerting.
The spoken, consisting of quotations from poetry, scientific and philosophical terms from Plato up to now, mirrors the alchymistic laboratories of the set into elements of nature, art and science.

The voices and the music mirrors a history of progress, from inarticulate sounds to sophisticated speech, from cultic rhythms to sacral organ music. This voyage through the picturesque tableaux appears as an aesthetically beautiful and mystic speech consisting of many layers, all about the wonderful creation: Man, his creations and attempts at controlling and understanding the world – about art as creator of world pictures.

…The whole concept of identical twins and doubles was stunning, but visually too, this is, I think, the most extraordinarily beautiful performance Hotel Pro Forma has yet produced. More than ever, the confrontation between the body and the dream on one side and thought and word on the other, which seem to be the basic theatrical idea of Kirsten Dehlholm, was realized, creating in the onlooker an emotional state of being both hallucinated and wide awake. A theatre about the stuff of which man is made.
…There is no continuous action, but a ritual of patterns that effects you almost hypnotically. Of course there is a theme: The identical twins as metaphors of the doubleness and unity of the world. The recited texts by scientists, philosophers and poets illuminates this. You can study these texts in a catalogue afterwards – this being itself a work of art. The rooms divides like cells – we are all doubles and participants in the genetic game.
But it isn´t labored and difficult. It is images, because Kirsten Dehlholm first and foremost is a visual artist. She has been that ever since she started some 20 years ago with Billedstofteater. And she has continued since 1985 with Hotel Pro forma with the one exquisite performance after the other. Not very much is meant when one says that this is the best Danish theatre can offer – so I prefer daringly to say: This is theatre of European scale.

…We are lucky to have Kirsten Dehlholm in Denmark – and along with her the persons who in past years have created the most outstanding experiments within the sphere comprise by theatre, performance and adaptions of spaces.
Events that have the captivating quality of being “things of which we do not know what are”, as a modern tinker has put it.
The common and stimulating doubleness of the performance consists in that it partly throws a chilly glance at the twins – seeing them as the technical mastership of nature and a tendency to see natural appearances, namely as random examples of their species representing a purely qualitative series; partly it throws the glance under which ten twins expose the focus of amazement – the wonderful outstanding, by which we would like to conceive the singular individual. The identical twins are seen in this twilight – from which the action derives its energy – at the same time mainly as object and miracle.

Hotel Pro Forma is a performance theatre intimately connected with the visual arts. architecture and natural science. Performances are presented in spaces of architectural significance not familiar with theatre and in buildings that refer to art and history like museums.

It is rather unusual for The Royal Museum of fine Arts in Copenhagen to give room available for a project combining visual art and theatre.

Fact-Arte-Fact is a performance and an exhibition devised to encompass the following themes: The Dual, Reflections in the mirror, Genetic engineering, Creation, Perspective and optical Illusion. It fuses art, science and technology. A sensuous screening of scientific and natural phenomena, inspired by the ancient Kunstkammer, the original to the museum.

Both the exhibition and the performance exist some place between construction and sensation, between consciousness and intuition. A re-enchantment of the world. It is however also a work of art that in its basic conception of form departs from the facilities of the Royal museum of fine Arts. The monumental building protects six centuries of expression, thinking, sensation and mystery, grasping both tradition and up to date expression. Allowing the audience in only a few moments to move from one century to another and enlive the universe of works of art with numerous productions of familiar and especially enigmatic phenomena, stimulating the imagination and intuition of the audience.

Fact-Arte-Fact also contains these qualities with leaps from one century to another with the melting of ancient thinking and contemporary modems. The West hall of the museum has been altered into a huge pictorial universe, ready to engulf both the visitor of the exhibition and the audience seeing the performance.

The exhibition, available during the opening hours of the museum, consists of paintings, objects, and architectural constructions installed in six rooms. The coordination of art and science in the 17th century form – along with the present day scientific reality – the basis for the sphere of motives in the performance and the instrumentalization of the exhibition. Elements from the modern high-technology of the industry and science world, is places together with natural products and works of art.

The performance runs at night in the museum as a series of tableaux with the pictorial lay out of the exhibition as the stage design. Five pairs of identical twins aging from 7 to 67 years perform in the show. Like doubles they infringe our perception of the individual as a unique sole, and as metaphors they symbolize the contradictory powers of life. In the front room two musicians play on wooden boxes as drums. Two angels stand in the doorway of each room like the guardians of Genesis “fallen from Heaven with the key to the abyss and a large chain in his hand”.

The compound character of the tableaux and the special richness of details demand nearness. The audience moves with the slow pace of the performance from one scenery to the other. Music, song, sounds and text are part of the performance. The wall in the middle is built not to reach the ceiling so everything can be heard from either side but cannot be seen.

Fact-Arte-Fact er skabt over temaerne: Det dobbelte, Spejling, Genteknologi, Skabelse. Et værk, der sammensmelter kunst, videnskab og teknologi. En sanselig gennemlysning af naturvidenskabelige fænomener.

Både udstilling og forestilling bevæger sig et sted mellem konstruktion og sansning, mellem bevidsthed og intuition. En genfortryllelse af verden. Men det er også et kunstværk, der i sin form-idé tager udgangspunkt i museet. Den monumentale bygning, der i som en beskyttende beholder værner om seks århundreders udtryk for tanke, sansning og mystik omfattende både tradition og aktuelle udsagn. Hvor publikum på få øjeblikke kan bevæge sig fra det ene århundrede til det andet eller leve sig in i et enkelt kunstværks univers med dets talrige frembringelser af velkendte og især gådefulde fænomener, der pirrer beskuerens fantasi og intuition. Også Fact-Arte-Fact indeholder disse egenskaber med spring fra det ene århundrede til det andet og med dets originale sammensmeltning af gamle og nutidige tanker. Museets vesthal er omdannet til et stort billedunivers parat til at opsluge udstillingsgæsten såvel som forestillingsgæsten.

Udstillingen der kan ses i museets åbningstid består af malerier, objekter og arkitektoniske konstruktioner installeret på hver side af en midtervæg i seks rum. 1600-tallets sidestilling af kunst og teknologiske opfindelser danner sammen med nutidens videnskabelige virkelighed grundlag for forestillingens motivverden og udstillingens instrumentering. Elementer fra industriens og videnskabens højteknologi indsættes sammen med naturprodukter og kunstgenstande. Inspireret af fortidens Kunstkammerets artefakter, som er oprindelsen til museet.

Forestillingen vises i museet om aftenen som et forløb af tableauer med udstillingens billedopbygning som den scenografiske ramme. Fem tvillingepar i alderen 7 til 67 år medvirker i forestillingen. Som dobbeltfigurer rykker de ved vores opfattelse af individets enestående væsen, og som billeder de symbol på tilværelsens modsatrettede kræfter. I forrummet strå to musikere. To engle står i døren til hvert rum som skabelsens vogtere, ”faldet ned fra himlen med nøglen til afgrunden og en stor lænke i sin hånd”.

Tableauernes sammensatte karakter og særegne detaljerigdom kræver nærhed. Publikum flytter sig i takt med forestillingens langsomme fremadskriden fra et tableau til det næste. Musik, sang og lyde, lys og tekster indgår i forestillingen. Midtervæggen, der ikke går helt op til loftet, betyder, at alt kan høres fra modsatte rum, men ikke kan ses.
